end

PURPOSE/ACTION REQUESTED

Receive an update on the proposed Disability Advisory Council and authorize the formation of the Council in Dakota County.

SUMMARY

At the August 16, 2022, Community Services Committee of the Whole (CSCW) meeting, the board directed staff to convene a time-limited workgroup to develop recommendations for addressing the workforce shortage, with a specific focus on disability services. Between November 2022 and June 2023, the Workforce and Provider Shortage Workgroup met to discuss underlying issues driving the lack of service access, explore creative solutions, and develop recommendations for actions the County can take to improve the situation. Staff presented workgroup recommendations at the July 11, 2023, CSCW meeting and received positive feedback from Commissioners to continue developing recommendations for implementation. Staff provided an additional update at the November 2023, CSCW meeting, with a specific focus on a proposed Disability Advisory Council.

Staff incorporated board feedback from the November CSCW meeting into an updated description of the proposed Disability Advisory Council (Attachment: Disability Advisory Council - Draft). Staff is seeking authorization to execute the formation of the Disability Advisory Council for Dakota County.

OUTCOMES

The Disability Advisory Council will offer individuals with disabilities, family members, businesses, and community service providers opportunities to inform Social Services and County decision-making processes related to how disability access and services are provided in Dakota County.
