PURPOSE/ACTION REQUESTED
Authorize the Deputy County Manager to execute a contract with the Metropolitan Council for Geospatial Data Formatting to continue Dakota County's participation in the MetroGIS collaborative.
SUMMARY
Along with the other six metropolitan area counties, Dakota County entered into a formal agreement with the Metropolitan Council in 1996 forming MetroGIS (Resolution No. 96-783). The current agreement (Resolution No. 20-380), was due to expire on December 31, 2023, but was extended for two years and will expire on December 31, 2025.
A new agreement (Attachment) between the metropolitan area counties and the Metropolitan Council has been developed. The new agreement recognizes the importance of perpetuating a strong, productive and mutually beneficial relationship which highlights the shared responsibilities and the continued commitment in providing reliable, authoritative geospatial data to one another and the public in standardized formats that maximize its usefulness.
By Resolution No. 14-143 (March 25, 3014), a free and open geospatial data policy was adopted, along with similar resolutions by the other six metropolitan counties, a new era of collaborative geospatial work continues. The free and open geospatial data policy facilitates the positive result of greater data availability and continued work to standardize that data among data producers serves to magnify this benefit. This new agreement with the Metropolitan Council, and similar agreements by the other six metropolitan counties, affirms that continued collaborative work through participation in MetroGIS is beneficial to each entity's internal needs and their collective interest.
